They are all A rated, meaning that there efficiency rating has to be above 90%. This basically means that they waste very little of the heat that they produce. Because of the efficiency rating being so high, the new boilers recycle heat that old boilers wasted in the flue gases. As a result of this efficiency they produce more heat per unit of gas that they burn, therefore saving you money on your gas usage. Peace of mind throughout cold winter months is a big reassurance that a new boiler provides. The market leading boilers offer a 5 year warranty and in general, all boilers throughout the market offer a 2 year warranty as a minimum. This means that should anything go wrong with the boiler, the manufacturer will remedy the fault as quickly as possible, free of charge. When new boilers are installed the manufacturers insist that the entire central heating system is thoroughly cleaned so as to protect the boiler. This cleaning means that the system will perform better for longer in conjunction with the boiler. Why do I have to bleed the radiators? Flow throughout the whole surface of a radiator is dependent on it being full of water. The most common phrase for a radiator that isn't full is an 'air lock'. This basically means that heat won't flow through an area that doesn't contain water. Air will commonly gather at the highest point on the heating system. One common cause of water escaping from a radiator is a weep on a valve which is so slow that you never see the water as it evaporates. It is a good idea to periodically check that your radiators are full of water to ensure there best performance. What's the difference between sealed and open-vented heating systems? Sealed central heating systems are pressurised. They are filled using a link between the water mains and the central heating system. This is called a filling link or loop. Instead of a small feed and expansion tank in the loft, they incorporate an expansion vessell to accomodate the expansion in the heating system. Conventional open vented systems are filled by a small feed and expansion tank in the loft which keeps the system topped up. What's the difference between unvented and conventional hot water systems? Conventional hot water systems use a large storage tank in the loft space to supply the hot water cylinder. Unvented hot water systems are supplied by the incoming water main. They don't require an tanks in the loft space. Like combination boilers, the performance of the unvented hot water cylinder is dependent on the pressure and flow rate of the incoming water main. Different types of boilers - Combination boiler (combi) A combination boiler is supplied by the incoming water main. It therefore negates the need for tanks in the loft space, hot water cylinders and the majority of the primary pipwork. The effective use of a combination boiler is dependent on the pressure and flow rate of the incoming water main being of sufficient strength. In general combination boilers are for use in smaller properties supplying one or possibly two bathrooms. A heating system with a combination boiler is sealed and it incorporates an expansion vessel within the boiler. - System Boilers The circulating pump for the central heating system is integral to a system boiler. The main benefit of this is that there is no need to an external circulating pump in the airing cupboard. Like combination boilers, the heating system when a system boiler is used is sealed. An internal expansion vessell is used within a system boiler. - Heat Only (conventional) Heat only boilers are the most widely used. They are supplied normally by a small feed and expansion tank in the loft space.
